Ahmedabad Experiences Tragedy: The Air India aircraft crash

After the horrific plane tragedy on June 12, 2025, the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight AI171 just minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, headed for London Gatwick, crashed. The flight crashing into a medical college complex in the Meghaninagar neighbourhood. The horrifying event has claimed an incredible number of lives including passengers, and crew members onboard.

Witnesses recount a horrifying scenario in which the plane lost altitude soon after taking off, struck the building in the residential area of Meghaninagar, and then burst into a huge blaze. Rescue and recovery operations began shortly with rescue teams reaching the sight of complete devastation caused by the crash following the ensuing fire.

Only one person, has miraculously survived and is presently undergoing medical treatment for injuries sustained. Reportedly, a total of 242 people were onboard including 12 crew members on board. It is being said that among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian were included on the passenger manifest, underscoring the tragedy's global reach. Tragic tales of families destroyed and ambitions dashed are coming to light as loved ones struggle with the indescribable news.

In the aftermath of the horrific incident Emergency services, such as fire engines, ambulances, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), responded quickly and reached the disaster scene. In order to assess the situation and offer condolences to the impacted families, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu visited the area.

Various sources cite that The Tata Group, the owner of Air India, has responded to the tragedy by promising to pay for the medical bills of those injured. They have also announced a compensation of ₹1 crore to the families of each person who died. As a precaution, the Indian government is apparently thinking of halting the Boeing 787-8 aircraft while more research is conducted.

This incident is the first tragic disaster involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and represents a dark day in Indian aviation history.
